Baseball Is Ridiculous: Tennessee Pulled Off A Perfect Slash Play Walk-Off To Escape Wright State
Baseball will never stop being the weirdest sport on earth.
One minute a team looks completely dead at the plate… the next minute a guy comes off the bench, fakes a bunt, slashes a ball through the middle of the field, and the entire stadium is going nuts because the game is suddenly over.
That’s exactly what happened Friday night in Knoxville.
Story Breakdown
Tennessee nearly got clipped by Wright State before pulling off a 4-3 walk-off win thanks to sophomore infielder Manny Marin.
The Vols offense had basically been asleep for most of the night. Through the early innings they had almost nothing going, managing only a handful of hits while Wright State kept applying pressure offensively.
Tennessee starter Tegan Kuhns didn’t have his sharpest stuff either, giving up eight hits and three runs across five innings while the Raiders jumped ahead early.
It was one of those games where you start thinking: “Alright… this might be one of those weird college baseball Friday nights.”
But Tennessee slowly clawed back.
Henry Ford delivered a couple big RBIs earlier in the game to keep the Vols alive, and eventually the game was tied heading into the ninth inning.
Then things got fun.
Garrett Wright led off the bottom of the ninth with a double.
Enter Manny Marin.
The sophomore didn’t even start the game. He had just seven hits all season and had been dealing with a hand injury earlier in the year.
But baseball loves weird heroes.
Marin stepped in, showed bunt to bring the corner infielders crashing in, then pulled the bat back and slashed a ball straight up the middle into the giant hole the defense left open.
Wright scored easily.
Game over.
Vols win.
Reaction & Commentary
I love this play so much because it’s the most “college baseball brain vs brain” moment imaginable.
This wasn’t just a random hit.
The entire thing was planned.
Tennessee’s coaches had noticed Wright State leaving the middle of the field open when defending the bunt. So they literally set up a situation where Marin would show bunt, watch the defense crash, then slash it into the gap they just created.
That’s baseball chess.
You almost never see it work this perfectly.
And the funniest part is Marin basically said the most baseball answer ever after the game, saying he was just ready when his name was called and focused on winning.
Classic baseball guy answer.
But if you’re Wright State you have to be sick watching that replay.
You did exactly what the defense is supposed to do. Crash the corners. Cover the bunt. Rotate the middle infield.
And Tennessee just used it against you.
It’s the equivalent of someone pulling the chair out when you’re sitting down.
Final Take
Look, Tennessee probably shouldn’t have been in that spot in the first place.
But great teams have a way of surviving games they have no business losing.
And sometimes it takes one weird, perfectly executed baseball play to do it.
A fake bunt.
A slash through the middle.
A walk-off.
Baseball in March is already drunk.
And Manny Marin just delivered one of the most satisfying little baseball plays you’ll see all weekend.
